Creating Good Soil is my attempt to share the journey of growing a family, and creating beauty in Oregon. Thoughts of faith, parenting, and an occasional artistic endevour will be posted. I'd love to hear your thoughts as we travel together.

Chickens with Frosbite
I feel like such a bad chicken mama! But it did get below zero the other day....Now the chickie girls have a heated water bowl, lots of straw, and daily vaseline treatments. Huh...a hot tub and facials? Sounds pretty good, girls!
Their little comb tips turned white, then black. Called the vet. She said that eventually the black parts will fall off. Peacock's going to have a very strangely shaped comb...she will probably lose 3-4 points. Speckles, our beauty queen, somehow resisted all frostbite damage!
We found an electrically heated dog bowl at the farm store. Works great.

How did you know they had frostbite? And how are you heating your water?
You are a great chick-mama... vaseline and all!
